PhD Zhang Named Microsoft Research Fellow

Justine Zhang, a PhD student in Cornell Information Science, has been named one of 10 fellows accepted to the Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship program for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Advised by Cornell CIS Assistant Professor Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil, Zhang’s research resides at the intersection of natural language processing, computational social science, and machine learning. According to Microsoft Research, her “computational models and analysis of complex conversational dynamics are bringing insight to how conversations shape everything from political outcomes to community identities.”

Zhang is one of two Cornell CIS students chosen as Microsoft fellows this year; Manish Raghavan, a PhD student in Computer Science, was also chosen.

Established a decade ago, Microsoft’s PhD fellowship program aims to promote up-and-coming students in computer science, mathematics, and electrical engineering. The program provides 100 percent of tuition and fees for two consecutive academic years and an annual stipend.
