InfoSci MPS Student Tushar Wins NYS Health Innovation Challenge

Congratulations to our MPS student Tushar, whose team HealthRank won second place in the New York State Health Innovation Challenge. The challenge was announced in March by the NYS Department of Health in an effort to use technology to help consumers make more informed health decisions. New York State made data on doctors and hospitals available to the tech companies involved in the competition and teams also found information, such as reviews, already available online.

Tushar's team, HealthRank, took home the second place prize of $10,000 for their app that allows patients to rank hospitals based on their needs and publicly available data from OPEN NY that provides patient discharge information. The app allows the user to rank hospitals by specific criteria based on their needs and diagnosis, rather than rely on readily available rankings that are broad and may not apply in all cases. Users enter information such as their location and diagnosis, then prioritize factors such as length of stay, cost, number of cases seen and distance. The app then provides the user with hospitals that suite the user's needs in ranked order, with graphics like maps showing distance and charts comparing number of cases of a particular diagnosis. See the attached slidedeck or visit the demo website for more information.
