Spanning the departments of Computer Science, Information Science, and Communication, bridging campuses in Ithaca, NY, and New York City, scholars and innovators at Cornell University are guiding the field of human-computer interaction. Each year, our rundown of Cornell papers at the annual CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems illustrates Big Red’s influence, and 2019 is no different.
By our count, Cornell University contributed 21 refereed papers (and several others in various workshops) at this year’s CHI, including two Honorable Mention recognitions. Notable papers include:
- René Kizilcec and a Stanford coauthor found that showing women in an ad for online STEM courses, along with a diversity statement, bumped women enrollment up by 26 percent.
- Maurice Jakesch and his Cornell and Stanford coauthors discovered we humans may not be ready to fully trust Airbnb hosts who rely on an algorithm to write their host profiles.
- Anthony Poon and his Cornell colleagues explored SMS and WhatsApp as tools to improve exam scores among African youths.
