Rene Kizilcec, associate professor of information science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers of Computing and Information Science, has received the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Bessel Research Award for outstanding research.

Named after Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, a German astronomer and mathematician, the award is given each year to roughly 20 researchers around the world. The honor includes financial support along with the invitation to conduct research at an institution in Germany for up to a year.

Director of Cornell’s Future of Learning Lab, Kizilcec studies the behavioral, psychological, and computational aspects of technology in education to inform practices and policies that promote learning, equity, and academic and career success. He is the principal investigator of the National Tutoring Observatory, a collaborative project among tutoring platforms, school districts, educators, and researchers to turn virtual tutoring data into the world’s largest open-access dataset on effective teaching practices.

His research has received support from the National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and Jacobs Foundation.
