Guidelines for Cornell Bowers spaces

This policy establishes content-neutral guidelines for postering within Cornell Bowers spaces to maintain safe, orderly, and welcoming facilities while supporting community communication. It incorporates applicable Cornell University posting guidelines and the Cornell Expressive Activity Policy.
 



Authorized Posting Areas

  • Postering is permitted only on bulletin boards or locations designated for public use by Bowers Facilities Management.
  • Bulletin boards labeled for department or special purposes may be used only for postings related to that stated purpose; unrelated materials will be removed.
  • Deans, unit heads, or building administrators designate appropriate locations for postering within their facilities. 
  • Faculty and staff may affix posters to their personal office doors, preferably with painter’s tape or magnets.
  • All other surfaces — including walls, doors, windows, non-designated outdoor spaces, and unmarked bulletin boards — are prohibited posting areas.
     


Content Standards

  • This policy applies equally to all materials regardless of content, viewpoint, or sponsoring organization.
  • Posters must comply with all applicable Cornell University policies, including the Expressive Activity Policy.
  • Commercial activity is prohibited.
     


Posting Requirements

  • Posters must be authored by Cornell University community members or registered organizations/departments.
  • Posters must include event or expiration dates when applicable.
  • Where possible, listing the sponsoring Cornell organization, unit, or individual is recommended but not required.
  • Posters should be affixed using thumbtacks or easily removable adhesives that do not damage surfaces; staples, glue, spray adhesives, or tape are not permitted.
  • Posters should not obscure or overlap existing materials.
  • A maximum of one (1) poster per event is permitted per designated bulletin board.
     


Maintenance and Removal

  • Cornell Bowers Facilities staff will regularly monitor bulletin boards and other locations designated for public use to remove outdated or unauthorized materials.
  • Materials within designated posting areas will be removed after the event date has passed to make space for new postings.

  • Posters placed in unauthorized, non-designated locations will be removed immediately by Facilities personnel.
  • Cornell community members should not remove others’ posters themselves.
  • Only Cornell Bowers Facilities staff may remove posted materials.
     


Compliance and Enforcement 

  • Repeated violations may result in loss of posting privileges.
