Joy started as a PhD student in Fall 2020, studying the questions of power and social justice as it relates to technology -- both by how it is built and what it is intended to do. Her work intersects disability justice and global health equity with design and research justice, human-computer interaction (HCI), and information and communication technologies for development (ICTD). Before Cornell, she designed and built technology for gig workers/entrepreneurs and community health workers/nurses in Africa (Nigeria, Ghana), Asia (India, Bangladesh, Indonesia), and the US as a co-founder of the Harvard College Developers for Development, Fulbright student research scholar in India, and a software engineer/user researcher at Google.
