Information Science undergraduate Kaitlyn Son (’19) discusses her Helping Hands initiative, which uses 3D printing to create prosthetics for children. Kaitlyn's project received a 2016 John Jaquette Award of $1,300 to aid further development.

“I probably went through six different majors before Info Sci,” she said. There was math and economics, and she considered arts and sciences, maybe law. “What’s funny is Info Sci is a culmination of all those majors because it’s so interdisciplinary. That’s what made it interesting.”

Julien graduated in 2012 Magna Cum Laude in Information Science with double minors in Science & Technology Studies and History. He credited Cornell with providing the opportunity to explore a broad range of diverse courses.

“Looking back, as a student, I didn’t ever think, ‘I’m going to start a company,’” he said, “but I did gravitate to chances to practice what I was learning in class, which evolved into entrepreneurship. When opportunities present themselves you have to be ready to take them.”

Reflecting on how the Info Sci program prepared him for the workplace, Culver pointed to specific courses like INFO 1300 (“Introductory Design and Programming for the Web”) and 2300 (“Intermediate Design and Programming for the Web”), a class where he served as a teaching assistant.
