Info Sci PhD candidate Lauren Kilgour recently presented her ongoing research on electronic ankle monitors at a conference at the University of Copenhagen. Her paper, "Aesthetics as Surveillance: The History of Electronic Ankle Monitors" traces the history of the aesthetic design of electronic ankle monitors and reveals the pivotal roles that the “look” of computing technologies play in processes of surveillance and governance.
"In so doing, this research addresses pressing concerns about the preservation of human and civil rights for criminalized people in the digital age," she said.
Kilgour presented her paper at Eyes and Ears of Power: Surveillance, History and Privacy, a conference exploring privacy and policy.
