For the fourth consecutive year, a Cornell Information Science researcher has been awarded a SIGKDD [Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining] Test of Time Award. This year, the award goes to Info Sci Professor and Department Chair Thorsten Joachims. In 2006, he wrote "Training Linear SVMs [Support Vector Machines] in Linear Time", a paper now considered essential research in the data-mining field. This is Thorsten's second SIGKDD Test of Time Award; he won one back in 2015, too.

Also, an interesting note regarding this award: Of the 8 SIGKDD Test of Time Awards that have been handed out since 2014, four of them have gone to Cornell researchers. Joachims, Jon Kleinberg and Eva Tardos are among the recipients.
