Cornell Computing and Information Science continues its efforts to increase diversity and inclusion into computing fields by offering two fully funded summer research programs at its campus in Ithaca, NY. Aimed at encouraging underrepresented minorities to consider PhD-level research careers, the SoNIC Summer Research Workshop and the Summer School on Designing Technology for Social Impact will be held June 15 through 19, 2020, and the programs are all-expenses-paid for selected student participants. Applications are being accepted now through February 7, 2020.

SoNIC Summer Research Workshop – originally developed by Cornell Computer Science Associate Professor Hakim Weatherspoon in collaboration with Howard University's Computer Science department – centers around cloud computing (systems and networking) and data analytics. Undergraduate and master’s students will experience firsthand how to use state-of-the-art methodologies and approaches to computer science research.

“This is a week to make connections and get insight from your experiences to then make decisions to guide you on the right path,” said Sebastian Perez-Delgado, a Northwestern University student who participated in the program last summer.

The Summer School on Designing Technology for Social Impact, led by Info Sci Associate Professor Phoebe Sengers and held every other year, targets rising seniors and graduate students from ethnically underrepresented communities. During the week at Cornell, participants will explore how technologies express their designers’ values, analyze what values and voices are commonly embodied in technology, and look at ways to design technologies to promote alternative perspectives and positive social impact.
